Sinabi ni U.S. President Joe Biden na nakikiisa ang Amerika sa mga bansa sa Southeast Asia sa pagtatanggol sa kalayaan sa karagatan, demokrasya at karapatang pantao.
Dumalo si Biden sa ASEAN summit sa pamamagitan ng video link mula sa White House..
“Our partnership is essential in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific, which has been the foundation of our shared security and prosperity for many decades,” ayon kay Biden.
“…the United States strongly supports the ASEAN outlook and the Indo-Pacific — on the Indo-Pacific and the rules-based regional order,” dagdag ng U.S. president.
Tumitindi ang tensyon sa pagitan ng U.S. at China dahil sa lumalawak na kapangyarihan ng China sa South China Sea.
Host ng ASEAN summit ngayong taon ay ang Brunei, at kasamang lumahok ang member countries na Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand at Vietnam.
Inanunsyo rin ni Biden ang plano ng Amerika na maglaan ng $102 million upang mapalawak ang strategic partnership ng U.S. at Indo-Pacific region.
Ayon sa White House, mapupunta ang pondo para sa mga programa kaugnay sa kalusugan, climate change, ekonomiya at edukasyon. Kabilang dito ang $40 million bilang tugon sa COVID-19 pandemic.
Nakiisa rin si Biden sa pagkastigo sa umiiral na military junta sa Myanmar na hindi nakabilang sa ASEAN summit ngayong taon.
“The United States stands for the people of Myanmar and calls for military regime to end the violence, release all political prisoners and return to the path of democracy,” pahayag ni Biden.
